How Does Our Island Sound?
Filmmakers: Catalina Gómez, Gonzalo Barceló, Sofía Rodríguez & Sofía del Pozo
Anthropological Research: Giovanna Bacchiddu
A sound documentary created from material recorded by children and teenagers from Apiao Island, Chiloé.
Apiao Island, with around 600 inhabitants, is part of the Chiloé archipelago. In October 2023, we conducted sound workshops in two schools. Through mindful listening exercises and microphone recordings, the children discovered and paid attention to the sounds present in the place they inhabit every day. From more than 10 hours of recordings made by them, we assembled a sound documentary of the island through their own ears. Among their voices, games, the birds, the sea, and the wind, the unique character of an island full of life emerges.

ANALYSIS
The Analisis folder shows how we reviewed and categorized the material from each recording made during the workshops. The criterion was to exclude sounds that were too saturated or had too much wind in the microphone. After this categorization, we discussed what we heard and felt in the recordings. From there, we created an editing script and produced the final work.
